Looking back at our journey, we didn’t know where we were going when we started. In reality, there wasn’t even an official start. All we know is that we love where we are and the direction we are headed and we didn’t need a GPS or a smartphone to get there. We have been written about in various magazines and we are always asked a ton of questions, so here we are. We are looking forward to sharing our journey with you and hopefully, you will follow. So again…why are we doing this? In a nutshell, we are doing this because we BELIEVE.
We believe that we are better people for taking this journey. We believe our families are better for being good sports, trying some our meals and slowly taking their own journey. We believe we can encourage others to feel the way we feel and start their own journey. So, join us on this PlantSlantJourney and you too will be a believer.

How did our journey begin? Prior to December 2015, we both thought we lived a pretty active and healthy lifestyle after all, we ate veggies and an occasional salad with our meat. Then we stumbled across the Blue Zones Project (You really need to check it out!) and signed up for one of their workshops. The story behind the Blue Zones Project is nothing short of remarkable. It started with a global longevity study, in other words, where are people living active, healthy lives as centenarians? Those areas were dubbed "Blue Zones". Their Power 9 principles really hit home with us as well as their motto "Live Longer, Better". Since that December 2015 workshop, we have both been ambassadors for the Blue Zones Project.
Approximately one week later, we stumbled across the Forks Over Knives documentary. According to the website "The feature film Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods". That is a mouth-full to say the least. The film also introduced us to 2 famous doctors - Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Campbell. Watch the film and you will no doubt be inspired as we were.
We discussed it and easily came to the conclusion that this is exactly the investment that we wanted to make in ourselves to Live Longer, Better. We immediately eliminated beef, poultry, pork and processed meats from our diet and filled our plates with plant slant foods consisting of veggies, fruits, nuts, beans and lentils. This was the start to our Plant Slant Journey. Little did we know where this journey would take us. Looking back, it is amazing to see how far we have come and how much we have learned about ourselves. We have been sharing our new lifestyle with family and friends and thought it was time to share it with as many people as possible. So, here we are. We hope you will be inspired enough to be role models and continue the journey with us!
We are a testament to the fact that anything is possible. Up until December 2015, we ate the Standard American Diet (better known as SAD). We thought we were fairly healthy. Giving up meat was not on our horizon nor was it ever discussed. Then we stumbled across the Blue Zones Project and Forks Over Knives. We decided to make some changes and even thought we didn't know it...the Journey had started!
I recently retired after a great career in the jet engine business and have spent the last few years advocating for Complete Streets...that is making our streets safer for all modes of transportation including transit, cars, bicycles and pedestrians. I am a runner, bicyclist and golfer. I found my new passion after watching some of the famous documentaries primarily Forks Over Knives, Cowspiracy and What the Health? I have done a great deal of research on living a healthy lifestyle and I hope I can pass on some of my knowledge and passion to others.
Our transition took us well over a year. We gave up meat right away and that was the easiest for us. Six months later, I gave up dairy and eggs. Seafood and cheese for me were the toughest, but I did it! I now consider myself a Vegan relative to what I eat, but honestly, I am working on the other products (toiletries and home cleaning products) to avoid all products that contain any animal ingredients or test on animals. Based on my journey, I have learned a great deal about factory farms and animal cruelty and do my best to make sure I do not add to animal suffering.

I presently work in the employee benefits industry and own my own consulting company helping people to be good consumers of health care. I started my career in the financial services world working with premier firms like Merrill Lynch and Payne Webber. After deciding to reinvent myself in 2001, I decided that working with employees in the workplace was more my calling. I too, have a passion for health and wellness and became a Certified Wellness Consultant in 2015. Like Doug, I enjoy be active, but my reason for giving up meat and dairy were more health related as my doctor was ready to prescribe cholesterol drugs as my numbers had crept up over the years. I asked my doctor to give me 6 months to turn my numbers around with diet. My doctor was not too happy stating that diet is not sustainable. I did not know exactly how I was going to do it. Then, along came the documentary Forks Over Knives and the rest is history. When I went back to my doctor, he was amazed. I know you have heard this before, but if I can do it, so can you.
